Gelombang dalam perambatannya membawa inergi atau dalam kata lain gelombang memindahkan energi. Salah satu contoh sederhana energi dapat merambat melalui gelombang adalah panas yang sampai ke permukaan bumi adalah energi yang dibawa oleh gelombang yaitu gelombang cahaya. Contoh lain adalah energi yang terdapat pada gelombang laut.
Gelombang laut termasuk gelombang mekanik dengan medium untuk perambatannya adalah air. Gelombang laut disebut gelombang ombak dalam perambatannya membawa energi dari tengah laut menuju pantai . Energi gelombang ombak inilah yang dimanfaatkan para peselancar untuk meluncur di atas ombak.
Gelombang ombak yang ditimbulkan oleh arus samudera, angin, dan tarikan pasang surut bulan memulai gerakannya di laut(samudera) lepas jauh dari pantai. Saat bergerak menuju pantai gelombang melambat dan mengumpul menjadi lebih tinggi. Hal ini terjadi akibat makin menuju kearah pantai dasar laut makin dangkal (perhatikan gambar)

Pada saat gelombang timbul jauh ditengah laut gelombang lebar berbentu simetris dan bergerak sangat cepat. Pada saat gelombang mendekat ke pantai yang dasar lautnya mulai dangkal maka gelombang akan, melambat dan mengumpul sehingga puncaknya akan tumpah pada gelombang tersebut. Para peselancar memanfaatkan gerakan ini dengan menaiki sebuah gelombang yang mulai pecah untuk meluncur. Dengan berdiri diatas papan dan sedikit di belakang bagian tengahnya. Dengan menyeimbangkan badannya sambil sedikit mendorongkan hidung papan diatas air kemudian menggerakkan papan menyamping memotong gelombang . Selanjutnya papan akan didorong oleh suatu gabungan gaya grafitasi dan gaya apung serta gerak gelombang itu sendiri kedepan menuju pantai.
Itulah salah satu pemanfaatan energi gelombang dalam bidang olah raga dan pariwisata tentunya kita berharap suatu saat gelombang ombang bisa dimanfaatkan buat yang lain misalnya menjadi energi listrik. Bila berhasil memanfaatkan energi gelombang untuk energi listrik bisa menambah kekurangan energi di tanah air khususnya energi listrik dan gelombang laut merupakan sumber energi yang tidak akan habis.
